Race Team

At the Barrie Yacht Club, we offer racing opportunities to our sailors who are working on their CanSail3 levels and higher. Sailors registered in these levels will have the opportunity to travel across Ontario to compete in regattas during their time of registration. The focus of this program is to push sailors out of their comfort zones to learn to sail fast, learn racing rules and tactics, improve their boat-handling skills, and learn the seamanship skills of participating in regattas. In some cases, sailors may have the chance to learn skills beyond their CanSail checklists such as spinnaker and trapeze. In this program, Lasers, Laser 2’s, and 420’s are used. Visit our registration page to find CanSail3-6 and race-specific programs.

Membership is not required. However, being fully vaccinated is required. Participation for the race ream is by application and acceptance. CanSail skills for Levels 4, 5 & 6 are taught in race team. Spinnaker, trapeze and racing skills are emphasized along with teamwork and responsibility. Sailors are paired up with a training partner and the pair charter a BYC 420 for $500 each for the season Sailors must accept responsibility for all equipment while in their care.
