We continue to navigate in uncharted waters as we prepare to further open the club and prepare for lift-in next weekend. I've been down at the club and have seen lots of work being done to your boats. The weather up to now has been magnificent!
While knowledge of how this virus is transmitted continues to grow, it is widely accepted the risk of transmission is greatest through sneezing or coughing. You may not think that you have the virus (a.k.a. asymptomatic) and feel like it is fine to socialize physically close with others at the club. However, you nor your friend can be entirely sure. Many people are barely comfortable even to be at the club this year, let alone those that are uncomfortable. Do not come within 2 metres of anyone not residing with you.
We wanted to get out a few operational related decisions that the Board has made, many of them under the guidance of Sail Canada, the Ontario Sailing Association, and the different levels of government. We are closely monitoring all levels of government, restrictions change, we will change ours as well. Until then these measures will be in effect until further notice. These will also be posted at the club and on the website (link) for further reference.
The guidelines from the City of Barrie are:
- Physical Distancing While Boating
- Only boat with the immediate members of your household: no guests.
- Prearrange fueling or maintain distance at fuel dock.
- Maintain physical distancing of at least 2 metres while on the dock and in parking lot areas.
- Keep your distance on the water: don't raft.
All members, including social and associate members, will be able to use the facilities according to the guidelines outlined below.
Lift-In & Mast Stepping
We will be distributing detailed instructions and protocols in the next few days.
Under the advice of Ontario Sailing and the Board we have made the decision to cancel the Sailing School for the summer of 2020. We have considered many options but due to safety concerns, we do not see a possible outcome where we can maintain a safe social distance while running a sailing school. For the health of our students, instructors and volunteers we have decided to cancel. Refunds will be issued.
Life at the Club
Clubhouse - The clubhouse and Great Room are closed, except for washroom use and emergency aid.
Washrooms – Only one person at a time will be allowed to use the washrooms. It will be up to individuals to determine if it is in use before entering. Wipe down all surfaces you touch after using. Sanitary hand wipes and hand sanitizer will be available. Regular daily cleaning will be implemented. Touchless faucet are being installed in both bathrooms, this precaution exceeds the Provincial requirements.
Please wash your hands.
Balcony – The balcony will be closed until further notice.
Utility Kitchen – The fridge in the utility kitchen will not be available. We cannot guarantee cleanliness inside and out. The sink and counter can be used to wash hands and rinse dishes or cookware members have brought from home. Wipe down all surfaces before and after using with soap & water or disinfectant.
Picnic Tables - If using a picnic table, we recommended you cover it with your own table cloth / cover from home and take home when you leave. The picnic tables will be spaced to allow for social distancing.
BBQ’s –Two BBQ’s will be made available, subject to the Province of Ontario current COVID-19 restrictions. Anyone using a BBQ must clean and sanitize the outside surfaces before and after use. Bring your own BBQ utensils and take them with you when you leave. A disinfectant spray solution of bleach & water will be available.
Muskoka Chairs / Loungers – Muskoka chairs and loungers will not be made available. Bring your own lawn chairs from home to use and take them with you when you leave.
Fire Pit – The fire pit is closed until further notice.
Cleaning / Sanitizing – In addition to the cleaning contractor performing scheduled cleaning sanitizing, BYC staff or designated volunteers, properly trained by our cleaning contractor will perform cleaning duties as required.
Garbage & Refuse – Please be diligent in placing all garbage, recycling and refuse in the appropriate containers. If you see a garbage container is full, dispose of it in the garbage bin near the entrance gate. Extra garbage bags will be available in each garbage container to replace the full one.
Cleaning / Sanitizing Stations – It will be up to each member to be responsible enough to use the sanitizing / cleaning stations. Cleaning / sanitizing materials are there for your use while using the club property. A cleaning station will be provided near the BBQ’s, on the balcony and in the main hallway or utility kitchen. Should cleaning / sanitizing material run out, contact Hannah Furyk when she is on duty or anyone from the executive that are on the property.
Work Party – A Work Party will be set up for Saturday June 13th. It will consist of Team Leaders with 2 or 3 volunteers responsible for specific areas. Areas include, but not limited to – yard clean-up, put up balcony awning, placing picnic tables, dry sail.
Please contact Ron Brown if you would like to volunteer. Only a limited number of volunteers can be accommodated to comply with provincial and municipal guidelines regarding groups and social distancing. Ron will respond to those volunteering with a confirmation.
Beach - will be closed for now but we anticipate reopening soon. You can use the beach to launch or retrieve paddleboards and club recreational boats.
Regattas and Races
Sailing competition under Racing Rules of Sailing is not permitted at this time, as no activity can take place if there is any likelihood of individuals coming within 2m of each other.
Recreational organized programs including Learn to Cruise, Learn to Sail, Get Out on the Water, club race nights, are not permitted.
The Lake Simcoe Interclub Series (LSIS) is cancelled.
Members are permitted to use club lasers and dinghys. Only those residing with you in the same residence can be in the same boat.
Thank you to all the members who have provided lots of great feedback and praise for our club opening process. The board has been working extremely hard behind the scenes to ensure a safe environment for everyone at the BYC. The executive has been putting in numerous extra hours and incredible energy to help ensure our members experience a summer on the water in the safest way possible while protecting the health and safety of everyone with due diligence for our organization's long term sustainability.
